Historic Sites
The photogenic Falls and beautifully manicured Niagara Falls parks, may make it difficult to believe the fact that this area was the scene of one of the most famous battles of the War of 1812 – a major turning point in Canadian history. Or that it was a significant stop on the Underground Railroad during the 19th Century. Niagara historic sites abound – particularly Forts from the 18th and 19th centuries. Visit Old Fort Erie, the first fort built by the British in the late 1700's and the site of one of Canada’s most horrific battles during the War of 1812. Visitors may also experience other national historic sites along the Niagara Parkway.
